I've been researching this house for over a year and I thought I would post
some of the information I gathered on the house. This is how the house
looked 20 years before being used in The Munsters.
The house was originally designed and blueprinted for the movie "So Goes
My Love (1946 - Universal Pictures It was orignally called the Maxim House)"
Then later featured in the movie "The Brass Bottle", and a couple
of episodes of "Leave it to Beaver" as well as cameo shots in various TV
programs.
After the Munsters, it was featured in "The Burbs" with Tom Hanks and
"Dragnet" with Dan Akroyd. Finally to be used in "Desperate Housewives"
in which, after a few season, was remodeled again to look less like the
Munsters house.
The house sets featured in the film were built on Stage 12, then after
filming (around April 1950) the sets were moved to the north edge of the
backlot, where they remained until they were moved to the current Colonial
Street (Wisteria Lane) in 1981.
Below are pictures of the house as it originally looked (Before being
transformed 20 years later for the Munsters.
Original soundstage build in 1946. Note there was not much to the house
in this film. Basicly the front and partial sides.
The house being rebuild on Colonial Street in 1950.
Final look of the house which remained this way for almost 20 years.
Even the original Munsters Pilot in color used this version of the house.
I'll see if I can post some of the blueprints from the 1946 build. I just
have to save them in another format.
